I saw this bird on my walk through the wetlands in early January:
DSCN2455
It’s clearly a duck or a goose.
I can’t find it in any of my Australian bird books.
Does anyone know what it is?

Note:
Oops! Somehow I inadvertently published two posts today instead of my normal weekly single post. I must have got overexcited and hit ‘publish’ too soon! This means that there won’t be a post next week, but I’ll post again the following week.

Wandering through the wetlands

I live between two houses — one north of Adelaide, one south.
Both are within walking distance of the beach.
Because of this, I often blog about coastal things: the sand and the sea.

But not far from our house down south there are wetlands.

Some days I see Eurasian coots there:

Some days I see Pacific black ducks:

The birds squabble and fight amongst themselves, honking and quacking and ruffling their feathers and bobbing beneath the water.

The water is reedy but clear …

… and sun-dappled.

Water always brings me a sense of peace.
And awe.
